theBACK is a satirical magazine publication that offers witty critiques of consumer culture by appropriating the visual language and techniques of advertising itself. The entire publication consists solely of advertisements for “products” that intentionally fall under the category of the mundane, overlooked, absurd, or unmarketable. Inspired by the visual language of 1980s editorial advertising by using bold layouts, vibrant photography, and pun-based headlines, theBACK uses nostalgia, advertising, and design tropes as tools for critique. By doing this, it provides critical commentary on contemporary consumerism with a satirical tone reminiscent of MAD Magazine.
